What lawyers dream about

22 May

What you dream about in law school:

Sleep.

What you dream about as a lawyer:

Sleep.  But now you can afford a bigger bed.

An unfortunate side effect of the legal profession is the lack of sleep that it entails.  Whether it be from stress or work overload, sleep is a precious commodity to the lawyer folk.  Law school is but a preview of the sleepless nights ahead.  So invest in a great bed…or at least a comfy desk that you can sleep on during the day.

The steep learning curve

8 May

Everyone working at a big firm will tell you about “the steep learning curve” that exists in big law.  And it’s true, the amount of stuff you have to learn in a small amount of time is overwhelming.  But it’s kind of ok – if law school prepared you for anything at all, it is cramming a lot of material in a short amount of time.  A Legal Ninja plays it cool, learns what he/she can and if caught off guard – totally pretends he/she knows everything.  Word.

Something other than work at work

2 May

There should be something to do at work other than work.  Back in high school, we all went to school for reasons other than school.  We socialized, we flirted, we hung out.  This should be a part of work too .

Too many big law firms take themselves too seriously.  They forget that a place of work should also be a place were friendships are made.  One of the first things I heard when I joined the big law club is that “co-workers are not your friends, they are your co-workers.”  Legal Ninja disagrees.  Some of the best friendships come from the mutual respect co-workers can have for each other.  But so often, these friendships do not develop in big law because everyone is so scared to be themselves.  They often feel as though they have to behave “by the book” and socialize as if they were reading a manual.  ”Ask how their weekend was – now.”  These feelings come from the top.  Many big law partners still subscribe to the old white shoe law firm mentality: “only talk when necessary, always be formal, business first, if you are laughing then you are not working.”  Although many partners may feel this brings a certain amount of formality and seriousness to the profession, it kills the social instincts and creativity that make business people so successful.  It also contributes to the high rates of depression and anxiety in attorneys.

Finding a place in big law that does not subscribe to this philosophy is a rare, but welcome thing.  When you do find it, cherish it and stay there.

When things click

27 Apr

First Year of Practice

Second Year of Practice

Third Year of Practice

*Note: Process is ridiculously faster for trial lawyers

Graduating law school and passing the bar kind of sort of prepare you for practice…but not really.  The moment you start, especially if you are a transaction attorney, you have no idea what you are doing.  Thing is, in big law, you don’t really know what is what until you become at a least a third year.  This is expected.  It’s frustrating, challenging, and all other sorts of “ings”…but it’s reality – and kind of a unique aspect of the profession.  Imagine being at any other job and not having a clear idea of what you are doing for at least 3 years. Crazy pants, right?

But when you get it – boy do you get it.  All of the sudden things make sense and you fear all the mistakes you could have possibly made when you just started.  But it’s ok.  This was originally an apprenticeship.  This is the way it’s supposed to be.  You are supposed to be a bumbling moron…until things click.
